Materials for Cold Forming - Steel and Aluminum

DEFORMABLE STEELS FOR COLD EXTRUSION:

Especially well suited for cold extrusion are those types of steel that when soft-annealed have low tensile yield strength and high elongation along with a flow curve that is as flat as possible. In practice this means that all low-carbon steels are suitable for cold forming.

DEFORMABLE ALUMINUM ALLOYS FOR COLD EXTRUSION:

Aluminum is cold-extrudable, and for some products it offers remarkable characteristics, so that aluminum can be seen as an alternative. Its nearly 100% reusability through recycling to starting material of equal quality contributes much to the conservation of resources. The weight that is saved also results in energy savings, especially in automobile construction (aluminum weighs only 1/3 as much as steel).

PROFITABILITY OF COLD EXTRUSION:

Cold extruded parts are marked by a number of significant quality characteristics, such as high strength, good surface quality, and exact dimensional precision.
Due to its high degree of material utilization and the extensive automation of production, cold extrusion can be called an economical production process in metal forming.

The profitability of cold extrusion the cold extrusion process is influenced by various factors.

The most important are:
• Materials
• Number of units
• Form of the workpieces
• Development and tool costs
